What I'm Learning

Today I wanted to share what I've been learning in a variety of online and in-person workshops!
I love teaching and encouraging others' creativity, but it is oh-so-fun to be the student, too!!
Seth Apter workshops
If you ever have a chance to take a workshop with Seth Apter, do it!
While taking 52 Card Pick Up and Collage Camp at Ephemera Paducah, I learned about building layers,
mark-making, integrating collage into mixed media,
and got caught up in the wonderful momentum of the creative process!
The fast-pace especially of 52 Card Pick Up made it impossible (in a good way!) for me to deliberate on decisions in my art-making. I worked from my heart and intuition – it was the right-side of my brain all the way!
It was truly a transformative weekend for me – one that continues to propel me and my artwork.
Mary Beth Shaw workshops
It's impossible not to have fun with Mary Beth Shaw!
And Not Yo' Mama's Stencils workshop at Re-invent Gallery & Studio was no exception!
When I am with Mary Beth, I laugh as much as I make art – and that is a good thing!
I always learn new techniques from Mary Beth, and her enthusiasm is absolutely contagious!
Roxanne Coble Lyrical
I cannot say enough good things about Roxanne Coble's Lyrical online art journal class!
I feel like this class was made for me! For so long, I incorporated scribbled song lyrics into art journal pages.
Roxanne, however, helped me to create an entire body of work in my art journal inspired by the song lyrics of Van Morrison. Roxanne shares
various mixed media techniques, the concept of synesthesia, composition and the use of a focal point, typography (and the designing of three different hand drawn fonts), tiered paint layering, art journal mediums such as oil and pan pastels, and finishing details. Roxanne is incredibly organized, and I use the class PDF she created often as a reference. I really want to take an in-person workshop with Roxanne one day!
Nancy Curry Transformations workshop
Nancy Curry's Transformations workshop at Maplewood Art Studio was wonderful!
So fun learning new art techniques! I had never used Citra Solv before, much less as an art medium!
But I'd bought a bottle a long time ago, that ended up unopened in my studio, so I was eager to learn!
Nancy is an inspiring teacher and had all our materials wonderfully organized for us.
She provided a hand-out, too, so that we could focus on art-making rather than note-taking!
I created a whole
pile of new collage fodder for my art journal pages!
Drawin' Letters with Megan Wells, Makewells
I love lettering! Lettering is so relaxing for me!
Currently, I'm taking Drawin' Letters by artist Megan Wells, of Makewells!
Megan's videos and exercises and PDFs are delightful!
And I love that there is no required supply list for this class.
Workshops with Megan Wells, Makewells
I'm signed up for Get Scripty and Letter Outside the Lines, too!!
StencilGirl & Friends: An Art Journal Affair
My countdown has officially begun to StencilGirl & Friends: An Art Journal Affair at Ephemera Paducah!
Four Rockstar Instructors. Two full days and nights with nothing to think about but Art Journaling.
Coordinated workshops will be taught by Seth Apter, Traci Bautista, Pam Carriker and Mary Beth Shaw.
A ton of art journaling techniques will be explored during this art retreat!
At the Improve with Mary Beth Shaw & Seth Apter
And there's this – At the Improv: a two-day art workshop with Seth Apter and Mary Beth Shaw at her studio in November!! It's going to be two days filled with mixed media techniques, creating backgrounds, texture, incorporating collage, color, mark-making, and dimension! The class size is limited to 12 students, and I am so lucky I got in! The last time I took a workshop with Seth and Mary Beth at her studio was a dream come true! It's like they were born to co-teach! Seriously!
I'd love to hear what art workshops you've enjoyed taking and what you're learning, too!
Have a great week!
