Sunday Layers

3/23/2011

Sunday, Dan and I hiked 8 miles around Council Bluff Lake.  The weather and scenery were wonderful: countess relaxing open lakeside vistas overlooked by forested mountains (Johnson Mountain) – lots of open stretches along shorelines.  The lake’s calm surface reflected the forested hills.  It was a replenishing 3 ½ hours of solitude and companionship.  Dan and I refuel during our weekends by long hikes and bike rides together.  He loves nature as much as I do.

After 2 miles of hiking, we were very pleasantly surprised to come upon a shallow creek filled with endless amounts of blue-gray shale.  Before I could say it, Dan did: “Look at all these layers!”

Just the day before, Mary Beth Shaw generously brought in Mica rock for us to layer into our strata paintings.
She had mined it herself and demonstrated shaving flakes of Mica from the rock to adhere to our paint.

Detail of my strata painting from Saturday's workshop. Mica is in the top layer, and the layer 2nd from the bottom.
The rest of our hike, I could not help but notice layers, layers everywhere –
layers of leaves, bark, slate, moss, algae, and pine needles –
and wondered what stories the layers recounted.

We learn new things every day.
What have you learned recently that really stands out?
For me, it’s layers.
Best,
Mary

Just found your blog on the etsy blog team 'pay it forward' post.

LOVE these photos! I also like to go for walks and hikes to restore my energy. There is nothing as beautiful as what nature has for us. Thanks for sharing these photos, they are very inspiring. Beautiful painting too :)

Thank you for your comment, and glad you love the photos! That's great that you also go for walks and hikes to restore your energy. I find that hiking in nature is one of the best antidotes for depletion. :)

Glad my photos inspired you!
Looking forward to visiting your blog.
Best,
Mary

Found on EBT! When you said "layers" in your description, I thought you meant layering clothes. Ha ha! But these are super cool. We don't have anything like this in Chicago.

Hi, Paige!
Thanks for checking out my blog and commenting!
Even if Chicago does not have hikes like this, you have a lot of amazing museums and galleries...and Lake Michigan!

Best,
Mary

Hi Mary,

Found you through EBT. The scenery is fantastic! Looks like spring is in the air.

Fantastic photography. The layers are just incredible. We had an interesting winter and were amazed to wake up one morning to layers of snow much like layers of sand in a desert. Unfortunately, the photos didn't capture the essence of the effect.

Thanks for bringing a little spring into my day!

XoXo,

Vicki

Hi Vicki,

How wonderful that these photos brought a little spring into your day!

Thank you for checking out my blog.

Wish I could have witnessed the layers of snow that resembled the layers of sand in a desert! Sounds amazing!

Best,
Mary
