“If we did all the things we are capable of doing,
  we would literally astound ourselves.
”
                                                                                  ~Thomas Edison

On Sunday, I was invited by The Vino Gallery to display 8 of my low-relief topographic sculptures in their next show!

What would compel a painter to cross over into the world of sculpture?
In 2007, during a residency at Prairie Center of the Arts, I had the unique opportunity to use an Omax waterjet, using elements of the earth (water and garnet) to cut.  The process is the same as water erosion found in nature but greatly accelerated and concentrated.  Inspired by topographical maps of places I’ve lived and painted, I created 120 drawings that I then scanned and saved into DXF (Drawing Exchange Format) files.  The waterjet cut each plywood section directly from these DXF files.  Afterwards, I painted and assembled these into 40 low-relief topographic sculptures.  Below are images of some of these sculptures.

The exhibition at The Vino Gallery is entitled STLPaints.  The opening will be tomorrow night and will feature artwork from local non-objective and abstract artists.  A portion of the proceeds from this exhibition will benefit the Youth Learning Center in St. Louis.  The opening reception will be from 6pm until close, is free and open to the public, and will be catered by Labeebee’s Mid-East Café.

Hope to see you there!

TGIF!
Mary
