Welcome to the StencilGirl Blog Hop featuring NEW StencilGirl Artist Andrea Matus deMeng!
Andrea's 12 new stencils are available to the public as of today!
Best of all, both Andrea Matus deMeng and Mary Beth Shaw are hopping along with us!! Yay!

You're on the right track if you just arrived from Mary Beth Shaw's blog. If not, no worries!
You can just follow the list below and start back at the beginning.
Andrea Matus deMeng StencilGirl
When I received Andrea Matus DeMeng’s Dia de los Muertos Mask stencil to play with,
it immediately brought back wonderful memories of the monotype workshop in Mexico City I attended during graduate school. During those ten days, our excursions included visiting Frida Kahlo’s home and all of its wonderful Day of the Dead adornments, and Teotihuacan’s Pyramid of the Sun and Pyramid of the Moon found along the Avenue of the Dead.

Bright colors of the Day of the Dead gave me permission to go wild with my own color palette and this stencil.
I began by using gel medium to adhere a vintage map of Mexico onto a 9” x 12” stretched canvas.
I thought the shape of this country would be a lovely way to frame the mask, too, without detracting from the
stencil’s intricate lines and ornamentation.

I allowed that to dry overnight, then placed the 9” x 12” stencil onto the painting and used an ink sweeper and turquoise green heavy body acrylic paint to pounce on the mask image.
Andrea Matus deMeng StencilGirl
Because of the translucency of the stencil, it was easy to place the stencil so as not to obscure Mexico City on the map with paint.

This paint dried quickly. And with flat paintbrushes and heavy body acrylics in copper, bronze, turquoise green and light rose violet, I painted in entire shapes I had stenciled.
Andrea Matus deMeng StencilGirl
Lastly, I realigned the stencil onto the painting and used these same colors (plus Cobalt Teal) to reapply the stencil onto these shapes, then allowed this to dry, and finally added metallic, dimensional embellishments with Viva pearl pens in gold, silver, copper and bronze!
