StencilGirl Viva Las VegaStamps blog hop
Welcome to Day ONE of the StencilGirl and VivaLasVegaStamps Blog Hop!
I'm so excited to share my mixed-media map painting I created!
Mary C. Nasser StencilGirl VivaLasVegaStamps
©2014 Mary C. Nasser, Discover, mixed-media/acrylic on canvas, 8 x 10 inches
This painting is framed and on display with my other mixed-media map paintings in Journeys, my show at Third Degree Glass Factory!

For this project, I used Plate 890 from VivaLasVegaStamps:

I also used the large map, 6-inch map, and 6-inch latitude and longitude stencils I designed for StencilGirl:
Map Stencil
Map Stencil
Latitude and Longitude Stencil
To start, I cut apart my plate and stamped images onto vintage book pages and ledger paper with waterproof black ink.
Mary C. Nasser StencilGirl VivaLasVegaStamps
Next, I used a bone folder to fold and tear around the edges of the images. I like the way the torn edges add to the vintage feel of the piece. Then I arranged these elements into an interesting composition and adhered them to a primed stretched canvas using gel medium.

I added Unbleached Titanium acrylic with a cosmetic sponge and drew lines and gestural marks onto the surface with a 6B pencil:

I added Iridescent Antique Bronze acrylic through part of the large map stencil with a cosmetic sponge, and painted in areas of Iridescent Antique Bronze and Cobalt Turquoise with a brush. I also added just a bit of Iridescent Rich Silver.

Then I painted areas of Colbalt Teal and Iridescent Rich Copper with my brushes. I also stenciled through part of my 6-inch map stencil with Iridescent Rich Copper. And I painted a circle with Iridescent Copper Light acrylic.

My last step was to add Wendy Vecchi white embossing paste through the latitude and longitude stencil onto the dried Iridescent Light Copper circle with a palette knife, then carefully remove the stencil (I used blue painters' tape to mask off the stencil).

When the painting was dry, I varnished the entire surface:
