“I had what it takes to make a good artist:
sensitivity and tremendous willpower.”
~Alice Neel, painter
I remember when I was younger, I perceived my sensitivity as a weakness.
I even used to apologize for being “too” sensitive – whatever that means.
It wasn’t until I was older and a more established artist that I really appreciated that same sensitivity.
My sensitivity is invaluable for both my painting and my teaching. So I’ve surrounded myself with other sensitive people (and pets!) and cherish that character trait in myself and others.
As for the tremendous willpower…this may be more of a skill that is honed and polished.
I believe willpower requires practice.

Alice Neel was a single mother.
Besides having what it takes to make a good artist, she had what it took to make a good single parent, what it takes to do well at countless tasks: sensitivity and tremendous willpower.
On your next undertaking, experiment with drawing upon your sensitivity and willpower.
Stay sensitive and strong!
