Recently, I visited Schmidt Art Center and its Cox Gallery where I will be exhibiting my paintings in May and June.
It was a quiet and cold – but sunny – Saturday, with just a little bit of snow left on the ground. I spent a good amount of time walking around the sculpture garden there, enjoying and photographing the work.
One of my favorite sculptures there is Astro Treillage by Michael Dunbar (the red sculpture in the upper right corner of my photo collage) and the way it resembles a sextant – an early tool used by sailors for determining latitude and longitude.

Another of my favorites there is H1460 by Claus D. Moor, made of White Carrara Marble (it is the center photo in the bottom row of my photo collage). Carrara is a city in northern Italy, famous for the white marble quarries
where Michelangelo chose the massive blocks that he transformed into masterpieces. I have fond memories of seeing Carrara from afar, while driving to Cinque Terre.
For those of you unfamiliar with The William and Florence Schmidt Art Center, it’s a gem located on the Belleville Campus of Southwestern Illinois College. Schmidt Art Center is a lovely 6,500-square-foot art
museum, which houses a collection of approximately 400 pieces. In addition to these wonderful outdoor sculptures, the center’s collection includes paintings, photography, and pre-Columbian artifacts. The art center also rotates temporary exhibits within its four galleries every six to eight weeks (which will include my work in a couple months!).
I can hardly wait to visit again to see the sculpture garden when all the flowers are in full bloom!
