“You get off the path and then get back on again for awhile,
and you trip along and then suddenly you stumble and you’re back on again.
I don’t think that process ever ends.”
~Elizabeth Murray, painter
I find a lot of comfort in this quote, particularly because it seems to apply to several areas of my life – not just painting. Elizabeth Murray was a magnificent painter, yet she even admits in this quote to losing her footing.
It's easy for me to relate to any analogy having to do with hiking or traveling since these are passions of mine.
A close friend of mine has minimized obstacles I’ve encountered by describing each as “a bump in the road.”
If only life came with a GPS!
The idea of life and art and relationships being journeys has manifested itself in titles of my recent solo exhibitions:
Sense of Direction, Off the Map, All Over the Map, On the Map, and You Are Here.
It may be worthy of mentioning that I don’t always have the best sense of direction.
Still, I pursue painting these small mixed-media map paintings.
The size is also of significance, requiring closer examination, yet portable enough to carry or put into a pocket on an excursion.
What path are you currently pursuing?
Pursue that path despite detours and diversions, even if it means taking the long way!
