New Work Wednesday: Two Roads

My new painting this week is entitled Two Roads.
©2012 Mary C. Nasser, Two Roads, mixed-media/acrylic on canvas, 5 x 6 inches
©2012 Mary C. Nasser, Two Roads, mixed-media/acrylic on canvas, 5 x 6 inches
This painting layers Matisse Background Colors,  Liquitex spray paints with Artistcellar's Old World Map Series Stencils, a vintage survey map, and acrylic paint and media on small stretched canvas.

This is another map-inspired painting, but taking a new and different direction.

First, the incorporation of stencils as a geometric accent/frame is new for my work.
I love experimenting with new media!

And secondly, I deliberately chose a vintage survey map to incorporate, rather than a map of the Big Island of Hawaii, in the hopes that a more ambiguous map-composition may connect with a larger audience in comparison to a map of a specific place that not everyone has visited. My hopes is that the ambiguity of the map leave the meaning of this work and place more open to a variety of interpretations.

Its title was inspired by the composition's image of the vertical road that splits into two and Robert Frost's poem
The Road Not Taken:

The Road Not Taken

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim
Because it was grassy and wanted wear,
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I marked the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Robert Frost

Congrats on the sale! This new painting has a bit of a 70's feel to me, with the big wavy shapes and colors, not sure why :o)

We actually had that poem read at our wedding ... it is one of my favourites and the priest read it as a nice gesture to me ... I think your painting captures it beautifully... and I am so pleased you are selling so much work...xx
