My new painting this week is entitled Turnaround.

Like last week's painting, this week's painting also layers Matisse Background Colors, Liquitex spray paints with Artistcellar's Old World Map Series Stencils, a vintage survey map, and acrylic paint and media on small  stretched canvas.

Its title was inspired by the composition's image of the loop in the lower left corner.
I love that a turnaround can be defined not only as a space for vehicles to turn around in but also

an abrupt or unexpected change, especially one that results in a more favorable situation.
Because life has its fair share of bumps (and sometimes potholes!) in the road...no pun intended!

I'm also thrilled that one of my topographical artworks sold on
Etsy yesterday!

This is one in a series of map sculptures I made with an Omax waterjet, using elements of the earth (water and garnet) to cut. The process is the same as water erosion found in nature but greatly accelerated and concentrated. Inspired by topographical maps of places I had lived and painted, I created drawings that I then scanned and saved into DXF (Drawing Exchange Format) files. The waterjet cut each plywood section directly from these DXF files. Afterwards, I painted and assembled these into low-relief topographic sculptures. Each sculpture is four layers deep.

The piece that sold last yesterday is entitled
Pilot Knob, Kentucky
...and it's been shipped to Kentucky!
I feel such joy when others connect with my art!

Mary your sculptures are amazing, and your painting of turnaround looks very luxe! I had emailed you with a question about your brand of liquid watercolors. I used some of your steps for my first Christmas ATCs which I posted for PPF today.

These are so cool! I love that you've created relief sculpture maps. I've certainly never seen that done before, and the end result is really attractive, especially when a few of the maps are lined up on the wall together. Congrats on the show and the Etsy sale.

I think the way you have taken these maps and created such wonderful abstract paintings and scuptural pieces is fantastic. You have found a subject you love to work with, this shows in your work and others will love them too. Good luck with the show
