My new painting this week is entitled Solitude.

This painting layers Hawaiian maps, typed text, mica, olivine, metal ephemera and acrylic paint on a teeny-tiny stretched canvas.

As an artist and an art educator, I frequently balance both solitude and community. Although I enjoy working closely with others – encouraging and guiding their creativity, I also love my solitude to paint!

Thanks so much for visiting my blog!
Hope you're having a wonderful week!

Mary^

Mary, I adore this painting! I am a person who craves solitude, so it really speaks to me. And I love the diminutive dimensions!

I really love this one, Mary. I am definitely more of a social painter. I find I am more productive around others. But I think this map is really beautiful, like a jewel,,,in the Pacific! Curious, how did you get started on the Hawaiian maps?

you always bring together the most interesting elements into your work. very thought-provoking-- makes me think about how solitude can be both a spot on the map and a state of mind.

It is so tough to balance that- right now I am in a by myself painting mode because I have been arting quite a bit with others lately. Love those bright blue spots - really draws the eye!

I can be in a room full of people painting and suddenly forget that there is anyone around me. It is important to me to have the right balance between being with people and time alone. It is so much easier now that I am retired.

I love this piece!

Very pretty Mary! I need solitude to paint too! Funny I wrote, love, then prefer, then need third....thanks for making me realize that! I just know I don't paint well with others around.

Happy ppf

Mary - LOVE this piece - thanks so much for your kind comment on my blog - as I was looking at this piece I was thinking of my close friend, Kimberly Jones, and how much she loves maps - I was going to send your blog link to her and saw, lo and behold, that she was your first commenter. Small blog world!

ps: we sound very much alike. I even dare say i enjoy my solitude more than i do the company of others. i think it's necessary for an artist to get totally comfortable with him/herself. Yes, solitude is a big part of my 'artist' self.

Another map..beautifully done. We all need to be pointed in the direction of solitude every now and then. It's good for the soul.

I´d love to see this one in person. The silhouettes of the ephemera are mesmerizing. The balance you speak about is shown here visually. Love every bit of it, including the size! :)

I love the idea of placing "solitude" on a map...designating it as an important destination in our lives. Beautiful!
