My new painting this week is entitled Process.
This painting layers Hawaiian maps, text, metal, ephemera, acrylic paint and media on a small stretched canvas.

Needless to say, I love the process of painting! It grounds me.

Last week, Melisa asked a great question about my art:
I was wondering, is there a reason you always use maps of Hawaii and of nowhere else?
Is Hawaii significant to you?

It’s a terrific question, one that others often ask, and that I enjoy answering!
I love learning as much as I can about geological processes! In particular, I am fascinated with the forces inside the earth can cause sudden drastic change, especially volcanoes! During my artist residency at Red Cinder Creativity Center, I had the unique opportunity to live between 2 active and accessible volcanoes on the Big Island of Hawaii.

I also had the chance to watch landscape being created and stand on the newest land on earth: landscape created by lava hardening into rock, which, in time, will transform into soil where plants will sprout and grow.
Those volcanic landscapes continue to inform and influence my work.
I remain captivated by the idea that geological shifts and transformations seem to parallel both individuals and their relationships: continually changing, varying, shifting and developing, too.

Thanks so much for visiting my blog!
Hope you're having a wonderful week!

Mary^

I love the textures I see here...and learning about your why regarding Hawaii. I was there once many years ago. I was young and took a hike wearing only flip flop sandals (not smart) across hard lava rock on one of the after flows of an eurpted volcano. I want to say Montaloa but not sure now. a hard walk.
Your art always inspires! I always see quilts in it.

Love, LOVE this piece! And I love the way you explore the comparison between geological process and transformation to process and transformation in and human relationships. I'm still chewing on your post about "deep time" from a while back, about how the earth shows its age in the layers of its geography. That is so true for the human psyche and body too, isn't it?

This is beautiful, it reminds me of the aerial views of the fields here in Europe, where many places the land is still cut up into many small parcels as it has been for hundreds of years, and I love this feeling of continuity. Valerie
