Opening by Mary C. Nasser
My new painting this week is entitled Opening. The title comes from the definition of volcano.

This painting layers Hawaiian maps, olivine, text, ephemera, acrylic media and paint on a small stretched canvas.

This afternoon I will be hanging my newest paintings for a show at St. Peters Cultural Arts Centre.
The Citrine Gallery will be featuring my art from April 7 to June 4, 2012!
If you are in or near the area, I would love to see you at the opening reception this Saturday from 1pm to 3pm!

One more exciting event…tomorrow is National Read a Road Map Day!! Hooray!
Just another great reason to celebrate paper maps that are impossible to refold! I love them!

I remember sitting in the way-back of the family station wagon that looked a lot like this...wood paneling and all:

Thanks so much for visiting my blog!
Hope you're having a wonderful week!

Your new work is gorgeous!
Reading maps... we drove from Illinois to Maine last summer and only used paper maps of all the states (a little help from google maps directions). I love reading maps. We don't have GPS or a SmartPhone and I felt so... retro? LOL.

Another great piece Mary and massive congratulations on your upcoming exhibitions! I'd really enjoyed your interview on PPF - it sounds like you've had such an interested life so far. Can I ask do you work as a geologist or as an artist?

National Read A Road Map Day??? And I thought we had some weird days over here. *lol* Mary, great feature on PPF! Love that sculpture. And you family waggon makes me smile. I see myself in the back seat as a kid, on the way to Southern Spain, followed by a caravan. That were fun holidays!

Congratulations on the gallery feature! Loving the grids you've been doing! So nice to hear about an opening day I am interested in compared to the opening day for baseball (which is a huge deal in the Cincinnati area).

This is beautiful. I'm really inspired by each variation of your theme in this series of Hawaii paintings. Each one is unique and beautiful on its own, but they all go together so beautifully. Someday, I hope to do a real series instead of jumping around all over the place. And yes, I have many happy memories of family vacations in our wood-paneled station wagon!!

Mary the Map girl... your work always blows me away. I would so love to see it up close. Those textures are just too much. i love it.

HEY! We had the same station wagon!! My parents would load us up in there for cross country trips with a cooler full of TANG (the crap sugar drink that had us wired for weeks!) and egg sandwiches. Oh yeah. I have stories. :-) Happy PPF Mary! xoxo

read a map day! I remember riding in a station wagon just like that as a child. My parents would lie the 3rd seat down and make a place to lie while we drove. I remember watching the stars through that window. Thank you for bringing back the happy memories. Happy PPF!

Hi Mary, What a pleasure to read your interview on PPF this week. Your glass butterfly is just stunning. As I think I've mentioned before, I love how you use geography as such a key theme in your art-- especially when Hawaii is the source. The colors in the pieces above are lovely-- i love the turquoises, oranges and golds together. Thanks for sharing!

Great composition and textures. I really love the car! A very long time ago, when travelling through some parts of the States with two friends, I owned a third of a car like this. The only car I ever owned. I loved it! So interesting to read more about you and your art on the PPF blog!
