New Work Wednesday: Hanley

I made the most of the recent sleet and snow and unexpected 4-day weekend and finished my dog sculpture!

For those of you new to my blog and art, last October I was asked by the Animal Protective Association of Missouri to participate in an exciting public art project entitled Harry & Hanley!

This public art project will celebrate the 90th year of the APA of Missouri bringing people and animals together and also raise awareness about animal adoption options and animal welfare.

Measuring 4-feet tall, 10 dogs (Hanley) and 10 cats (Harry) are being designed by artists.

I deconstructed St. Louis area maps, cutting these maps into hundreds of mosaic-like pieces approximately 1-inch in diameter. Then I rearranged and reorganized these pieces, collaging them onto the surface of the sculpture using polymer medium. Finally, I coated the entire exterior with a transparent varnish with UV-filter. Now the sculpture is weather-resistant, easy to clean, and scratch-resistant, too!

At some points in the process, as I adhered more pieces, I could swear that even more surface seemed exposed than when I began! But it was when the task seemed overwhelming that I thought of Daphne and Bruno – my own rescue dogs – and the immeasurable amount of unconditional love they’ve given to me. Daphne was a 4-year-old stray; no one knew her history. The vets even estimated her age by her teeth. And for little Bruno, I am his 4th home; he was relinquished by 2 previous families, then stayed with a foster-mom until he found his way to me and his forever-home. This sculpture is a tribute to them and the special relationship between all people and animals.

I’m so honored to be a part of this awesome project!

All the works will be on public display soon in the St. Louis area to promote animal welfare and raise funds for the APA!

I’ll keep you posted!
Mary^

It's an amazing sculpture. The little maps are not only colorful, but they remind me of all the roads a stray dog might wander before he finds a home. Thanks for sharing this wonderful work and rescuing dogs!
