New Work Wednesday: First View

1/11/2012

_My new painting this week is entitled First View.
This painting layers a Hawaiian map, text, Wood Icing, olivine, mica, and acrylic on a teeny-tiny stretched canvas.
First View by Mary C. Nasser
_ Also, Daphne and I want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all the wonderful wishes and
encouraging comments left last week after her diagnosis of chronic bronchitis.

The veterinarian’s aim was to break the coughing cycle, reducing the coughing by more than 70-80% and to reduce the severity of the coughing fits. Well I am pleased to report that the Prednisone a
nd bronchodilator definitely opened up Daphne’s airways and the coughing fits have nearly disappeared! I told the veterinarian that she is 90% better, and we have a follow-up appointment this week with the doctor.
No more coughing in the night, and my sweet Daphne is nearly back to her old self!
Picture
Daphne's been enjoying this week's record-breaking high temperatures in St. Louis!
_Last week, too, I saw many other artists posting their 2012 words.
But it seemed so daunting to me to choose only one word for the entire year.
Then yesterday I read Layla's Word of the Year post on The Lettered Cottage.
After reading this post, the first word that came to my mind was flow.

Don’t get me wrong, I love lava flow and anything having to do with volcanoes and geology.
But could flow work as a word that would serve as a guide as I make decisions throughout the year?
My curiosity got the best of me, so I looked up flow in the dictionary.

As a verb it means:
– to move or circulate, rise, abound
– to proceed smoothly and readily
– to have a smooth continuity

– to hang loose
– to bend under stress without cracking or rupturing — used especially of minerals and rocks!

And as a noun it means:
– a smooth uninterrupted movement or progress <a flow of creative ideas!>

– the direction of movement or development <go with the flow!>

So with that said, I mean read, the Word of the Year I have chosen is flow!

_Linking up with The Lettered Cottage on January 16th:

_Thanks so much for visiting my blog!
_Hope you're having a wonderful week!

I'm so pleased to learn that Daphne is so well recovered. She's such a sweetheart!

I love this piece (as I love all your pieces) and especially like the wording on it.

I like your choice of word for the year - it does seem very apt for someone who loves geolographical rocks and lava so much! I've posted about my word for the year this week too as the other choices people made got me thinking!

I like this new little piece. Great textures and colors. I'm so glad to hear Daphne is doing better. I lost my own little old friend at the beginning of the month and it's a difficult thing. I've been thinking I might like to choose a word for the year, too. I noticed several of my artist friends had one last year. I haven't quite decided on one yet. Flow is a wonderful choice!

I'm glad Daphne is doing better. Gotta watch that prednisone as it is a weight gainer. My family pet member when she was here had to take that as well. She gained a lot of weight. Love your work. Nice color and the texture is great. Take care.

Gloria,
I am so glad you visited and left your comment...it was boggling my mind why Daphne seemed so hungry constantly! Your description of your experience with your pet using prednisone explains it. I did read that it caused increased thirst. Fortunately, Daphne is already being weened off the prednisone and should be off of it entirely in another week or so. :)

You should give Wood Icing a try! It has the consistency of peanut butter when wet...but dries without shrinking at all! Adheres to any surface like canvas, wood, paper! You can even carve back into it after it's dry!

Very nice, Mary. I love the gorgeous blue in this one. Flow seems like an excellent word choice. It has so many meanings on so many levels. It is used to describe a mental state in which a person becomes completely engrossed and productive in their work -- a wonderful place to be!

I love Daphne's ears, too! :)
She is a min-pin mix. I adopted her from the Humane Society of Missouri when she was four (her age was estimated by her teeth).

Believe it or not, her ears stand tall and erect even when she sleeps!! The only time her ears or tail aren't standing tall is when she's not feeling well.
