New Work Wednesday: Far Away

Recently, a gallery manager contacted me, asking if I would you consider doing three commission pieces for her to commemorate her travels to Africa, Zambia in particular, with some animal elements.
She wrote: "These would make great gifts for my traveling companions."

I welcomed the opportunity! She actually contacted me before taking this trip, so I encouraged her to collect ephemera from the trip for me to collage into the layers to personalize the paintings.

This week, I'm sharing the first commission:

This painting layers collage, a vintage map, graphite, acrylic paint, Wendy Vecchi embossing paste, metal ephemera, and a porcupine quill and coin from Africa on a 9" x 12" stretched canvas. I framed this in a handmade black wooden frame for the patron, too.

It was a fun challenge incorporating and integrating the porcupine quills and coins she brought back for me from Africa! You'll see these elements again in the other two commissions as well. It was also a fun challenge to make something unique for this patron and what she desired in the work while maintaining my own style including my limited color palette (for example, painting the silhouette of the jaguar in turquoise!).

I layered portions of my large map stencil, small map stencil and map symbols stencil along with the word "go" from Carolyn Dube's uplifting words stencil in this piece, too.

Below are details of the work:

It's an honor and delight to work one-on-one with patrons to create special paintings.

If you'd like to commission a mixed-media map painting or series of paintings, please feel free to contact me.
I'd love to work with you!

Stay tuned...next Wednesday I'll be sharing the second commission!
Thanks so much for visiting my blog!
Have a wonderful week,

Wonderful, Mary! nice use of color, and I love how you incorporated her ephemera with your supplies.

How lovely to be commissioned to do 3 paintings and all for the same person! It was good that she asked before her travels as she would've been thinking along the way of the memorabilia that would work wonderfully with your style of art. This is wonderful and I'm sure she'll love it.

I loved this commissioned work. It is so full of personality. It reflects adventure and memories at the same time. I can't wait to see the other two.
