My new painting this week is entitled Exploring.
©2012 Mary C. Nasser, Exploring, mixed-media/acrylic on canvas, 3 x 4 inches

This painting layers maps, mica, text, olivine, ephemera, wax, acrylic paint and media on a small stretched canvas.

Most of you know that many of my current paintings are inspired by Kilauea, but I also have very fond memories of hiking the Kilauea Iki Trail – walking across what was once a lava lake!

The 4-mile trail starts in the rain forest on the crater's rim, then descends 400 feet to the still-steaming crater floor. I loved walking among the steam vents, cracks, olivine and rocks.

After walking across the entirety of the crater floor, the trail ascends back up 400 feet, the equivalent of a 40-story building! But the climb is well worth the effort; the last half-mile of the trail is along the crater rim with overlooks of Kilauea Iki. It was rewarding to pause at each overlook and appreciate the experience of walking through a dynamic, ever-changing volcanic crater.

Thanks so much for visiting my blog!
Hope you're having a wonderful week!

Mary^

Beautiful colors and textures. This is more text than I've seen in your paintings, and I like it! I've hiked that trail and agree that it's wonderful.

Mary, your painting has all the excitement of the trek across the dried lava bed lake. Your writing about your hike was fascinating as well as the beautiful textured art work.

Beautiful! Love how you are you using lines- the lines of color, the lines(or strips) of paper, the dots making a "line".
