My new painting this week is entitled Deep Time.

This painting layers Hawaiian maps, typed text, mica, metal, ephemera, acrylic paint and media on a small stretched canvas.

American writer John McPhee coined this phrase deep time in his book Basin and Range in 1981 to describe the immensity of all history, the antiquity of the earth: stories figuratively told by the layers of rock laid down over many years. I love the layers of landscapes and the stories these layers tell, too!

Thanks so much for visiting my blog!
Hope you're having a wonderful week!

Mary^

This is beautiful, really interesting , the many layers of rock are always something that intrigues me, we are really fortunate to have several areas here where you can fossil picking, my children when they were small said that the rocks looked like layer cakes, to understand the so much about pour past just by the layers of rock is just amazing and something I love to read about,

I have to admit that I have a deep fondness for incorporating maps into our artwork as it speaks to me of a deeper mapping of our process. Lovely work!

I was surprised to see the dimensions on this and realize it's tiny! I always imaging your paintings as being the size of a school wall map.

Love this piece of art! So much thought on the details ... like not using the "d" in island and using various and unexpected media. I also love that your inspiration came from a book. Very, very nice! I found you through Jennifer Rizzo's project party and am going to follow you via Networked Blogs. For me, the best aspect of art is the thought process that goes into the piece. I love thinking about what motivated the artist and how they came up with the idea for their piece

Love it Mary You have a great sense of texture in this and I get it about the layers of the earth. My nephew is into archeology for a Boy Scout outing and he is so excited to find treasure hiding under our feet from the history of the good ole Earth's history.
Have a great week !
