Tomorrow morning, I will have the privilege of leading another pediatric workshop at St. John’s Mercy Children’s Hospital. The children and I will create our own kaleidoscopes filled with all kinds of nature goodies: dried flowers (angel wings, butterfly pods, casurina tree cones, globe amaranth, pinquinca leaves, rosebuds and petals, rose buttons, rose hips, and yellow and purple statice flowers), minerals (including calcite, fool’s gold, and gypsum rosettes), glass marbles, and polished gemstones (agate, amethyst, aventurine, jasper, rose quartz, tiger eye, and other stones).
This workshop is part of Healing Through the Arts – a series of free art workshops, hosted by St. John’s Mercy Medical Center and St. John’s Mercy Children’s Hospital, designed to enhance healing for patients and their families.
Healing Through the Arts
St. John’s Mercy strives to embrace a deeper definition of health and provide healing for body, mind and spirit to each patient by maintaining a total healing environment. This means offering services to patient that complement and integrate with traditional medicine, creating a comprehensive opportunity for patients to heal.
About Art Therapy
Art therapy is based on the belief that the creative process involved in artistic self-expression is both healing and life-enhancing. Throughout history, the arts have been used to relay messages of importance. In recent years, art has become a powerful tool for those coping with illness by providing a creative form of self-expression and a method for sharing stories of struggle, gratitude, anger, peace and healing.
