Friday Favorite: Tom Rook

This Friday’s featured artist is Tom Rook and his hand-drawn aerial city maps!
I love the architecture and intrinsic detail of his maps, and the scale of his maps is mind-blowing!
Each map is like hundreds of works of art in itself!

He writes:
For most of my life I've been recording my memories, and the world around me, through drawings and maps.

I drew the first of these as a child in my Devon hometown, and now I've traveled and expanded this collection into Taiwan, where I now spend most of my time.

I've always been fascinated with illustrated maps, and feel they capture a place in a special way. I find the process totally absorbing, and moving into different landscapes and cities has intensified that.

Most of the maps…were drawn while living in or near the depicted area. I use them as both as a journal of the time spent in each place, and as a way of getting to know and understanding it.

I love maps, and the selections you choose to share are wonderful. I haven't actually used maps in my art, but have made maps from various types of mixed media. Really enjoy your blog.

Thank you so much for visiting my blog and your thoughtful comments on my map art. I had forgotten about my "quilt" maps on my comment above. Working on too many things at the same time.
