Friday Favorite: Tim Wallace

This Friday’s Feature artist is Tim Wallace!

I love the “bogus map art” he creates!

From his blog post dated February 11, 2011:

I’ve been doing an awful lot of trudging through code lately. And that’s alright, I guess. But I realized the other day that I’m quickly feeling out of touch with tangible design tools. So, in an effort to get back into static map design, I’ve decided to attempt to design a series of bogus art maps (of the lower 48) until I run out of artists, time or interest. Essential to this effort is that I do not get carried away making them perfect emulations of style. So don’t get your hopes up that I will actually fool someone into thinking that Duchamp made a map of the lower 48. Unless… wait, did he? I started to read some tome the other day about Seurat’s color theory… yeah, no. I’m not going to get that detailed. Call them mock maps. Call them nonsense or meaningless. I won’t be bothered; I’ll have to agree.

When another artist "gets" you, it's the highest compliment. And one way to express it is in an original interpretation of that artist's style. Tim's work is perceptive and his approach is quintessentially "artistic"—that insouciance, that focus on getting the work done rather than worrying about perfecting the emulation or responding to reactions.

"I won't be bothered, I'll have to agree." Priceless!

Tim Wallace's maps are great - and I discovered you can purchase cards of some of the maps from ZAZZLE.com
