Friday Favorite: Leslie DeRose

5/6/2011

This Friday’s Feature artist is Leslie DeRose!

I love her bicycle-map paintings – especially the works containing Chicago maps!
But I'm really hoping to commission her to create a bicycle-map painting of Sitka, Alaska, where my husband and I rented bikes on our honeymoon!

In her artist bio, Leslie writes:

I have a degree in Art Education and was a teacher for four years in Charlotte NC. In 2009 I had my daughter and I now stay at home with her. Every spare second of my day is spent creating something or brainstorming. Yay for naps! I casually painted and did photography but have been painting more seriously for about a year and a half.

What an amazing play of negative and positive space! Brilliant!!! And I love the palette-knife application (I'm assuming because of the fantastic texture) of the acrylic paint... yummy and buttery!

love,
brienna

Great description, Brienna...it is a buttery, yummy painting texture!

And the relationship and ambiguity of the positive and negative space is wonderful!

I love the combination of eco friendly transport and a map! Very creative and lovely to look at. These pieces could be very popular here in Holland, where there are more bikes than people and we need a map to find the right bike path!
