Friday Favorite: Laura Moriarty

This Friday’s Feature artist is Laura Moriarty!
I love her geologically inspired sculptural paintings and encaustic monotypes!

She writes:
I work at the boundary of painting and sculpture, making installations and pedestal-based works that are an elaboration of visual information. Referencing diagrams found in earth science textbooks, I study the way events and phenomena occur in the geological time scale, creating micro/macro records in paint of what happens below a terrain's surface.

Caldera (and detail), 2010, encaustic on panel, 11 x 5 x 5 in.
These encaustic monotypes are a by-product of my sculptural works. I use a heated metal plate to help erode and plane the painted surfaces, and in the process create these interesting skid-marks. Sometimes I capture them on paper as another way of recording time spent making art.
