This Friday’s featured artist is Kristen Ley of Thimblepress and her lovely State Flower Collection of Letterpress prints!

Kristen writes:
Each original illustration of mine is a marriage of both the state shape and state flower.

The color scheme chosen for the series was based around the actual flowers themselves. The yellow prints are all flowers that have a yellow to slight orange color, the red prints are all flowers that fall into the pink to red color, the green prints have flowers that are green and/or white, and the blue prints all have blooms of a violet to blue color. I chose to keep a simple palette when developing the colors.

The idea for the State Flower Collection came from a quote I read when traveling through the beautifully flowered highways in East Texas near Austin. The quote is by Lady Bird Johnson which reads, “Where flowers bloom so does hope.” I found the quote to be truly inspiring and the starting point for the collection.
