Friday Favorite: Jerry Gretzinger

This Friday’s featured artist is Jerry Gretzinger and his imaginary map made up of 2600 panels!
I'm as fascinated by his process as I am by the size of this map!
Jerry Gretzinger
In 1963, Jerry Gretzinger began doodling this map as a way to escape the boredom of his current job.

Today, nearly 50 years later, this map is comprised of 2600 panels, spanning nearly 2000 square feet!
And it is still a work in progress! I love it!
Just like actual landscapes, his map has evolved over time as he has reworked sections of it.
Jerry uses a detailed and intricate system to make revisions and additions, by randomly choosing instructions from a deck of altered playing cards.

The map expanded and developed as it went with Jerry though college, to the Peace Corps in Tunisia, to his SoHo loft in New York City, and finally the attic of his home in Cold Spring, New York.

Gretzinger's map was recently exhibited in the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art!
This was the first time Jerry saw the whole project laid out at once!
Catwalks were installed to allow for viewing from above!

Documentary filmmaker, Greg Whitmore, tells the story of Jerry's Map in the short film below,
definitely worth the watch!

TGIF!

This was so fascinating to see how each page evolved in that video. Thank you for sharing his map.

I looked on their web site and the show was really short lived. That is too bad. I was hoping to see it next summer when I go out. Maybe they will bring it back. The work is amazing.
