This Friday's featured map artist is Erika Norris. Her wonderful attention to detail and craftsmanship in these intricate hand-cuttings is mesmerizing. Some works are cut from road maps, and some from white paper.
From her Artist Statement:
Partly autobiographical, my artwork is motivated by a lifelong interest in the ambiguous nature of identity; exploring our individual place in the world from both personal and societal expectations.
I build obscurity in my work through layers, which create images that are both familiar and alien. The subjects of my works are often chewed, displaced, or disfigured. This intentional manipulation and the layering of tracings, color, or imagery increases the uncertainty of the subject. My works are highly detailed and small in scale to convey their personal experience and intimate nature. By grouping works into series, I am able to narrate these life events and develop a dialogue with the viewer. In essence, my artwork fosters personal connections through its examination of the uncertainty of the self.
