Friday Favorite: Emily Silver

This Friday’s Feature artist is Emily Silver!
I love the way she uses watercolors and actual sediment to paint on paper!_

From her artist statement:

Raised in a family of geologists and artists whose ancestors took part in the settling and mapping of the West,
I have deep affinity for the desert, its history, natural systems, and the dynamics of our interaction with it.

While the physical properties of watercolor are the same as those that sculpt the earth, my inquiry involves the unmappable essence of specific places – the psychological, atmospheric and spiritual experienced during very deliberate walks.

My art is continually inspired and renewed by real and imagined visits to the American deserts where I engage in a disciplined practice of walking, mapping, research, documentation, and, ultimately, painting.

These look so great! They remind me of the sand displays that can turn upside down to let the water go up and the sand go down. Except this one you can keep perfect all the time, no flipping required :-)

These are awesome. The desert is not my favorite place, the mountains are my fave, but Emily has a beautiful take on them!

Wow, these are fascinating. I can't decide if they look like abstract paintings, micro pictures of ice, or maps of starsigns... :o)

If geology is your interest you should google Kevin White from Broken Hill Australia. He has been a miner all his life and in his art he uses pure minerals from the area surrounding Broken Hill which was Australia"s largest site for Lead, Silver and Copper. Hope you do look him up. Cheers from Oz
