Emily received her Masters Degree in Architecture and started creating soft-maps as an academic experiment in tactile wayfinding; the quilts were inspired by Emily’s own mother Peggy who had begun losing her eyesight from complications of glaucoma.
It's a powerful idea to think of maps as tactile tools, comprehended through the sense of touch.
If you live in the New York City area, you can even participate in weekly sewing nights at Haptic Lab's Brooklyn studio beginning next month!
And I can hardly wait for their map KITES in 2013! Whee! Sounds like lots of map fun!
