This Friday’s Feature artist is Ania B. Alyson!
I'm sure it comes as no surprise that I love the idea of repurposing cartography!
In her artist statement Ania writes:
Before I begin, each sheet of paper requires that I learn its texture, fibers and knots for my x-acto knife to find the best route for its cuts. When using solid paper I first draw the intended cut lines with a pencil on the reverse side - this allows me to cut the entire design in one beautiful piece. I cut through maps, book pages and music sheets freehand.

Ania lives in Seattle, Washington, with her husband, James, and dog Ludovic. She began studying Eastern European folklore paper cutting eight years ago. Two years later, she began creating one-sheet cutouts from solid color paper. Now her media of choice includes outdated maps, dictionaries, vintage books and music sheets.
