This Friday’s featured artist is Amy Lewis Mesko and her meticulously hand-cut maps of cities across the United States and beyond! Love the intricacy and attention to detail in these!
She writes:
I love everything about paper -- the feel, the smell, the sound -- and have experimented with many types of paper art. I've found that paper cutting satisfies my love of the sensual aspects of art and in my life.
Paper cutting uses a very fine blade to remove the negative space in an image, whether it's the space between roads in a map or the space between the branches of a tree. It requires extreme precision if one wishes to end up with a recognizable image, and the focused and repetitive movements of my hand with the blade removing that negative space bring me a sense of peace and joy in a life that often feels cluttered.
