I was honored that this low-relief topographic map sculpture of Jose Butte, New Mexico, sold recently from my Etsy shop! It was purchased as a wedding present for the buyer's brother! I gift-wrapped it in pretty silver paper and a silver ribbon and shipped it directly to her brother in Albuquerque. It was during an artist residency that I had the unique opportunity to use an Omax waterjet to create a series of low-relief topographic map sculptures. The waterjet used elements of the earth (water and garnet) to cut, and the process was the same as water erosion found in nature but greatly accelerated and concentrated. Inspired by topographical maps of places I'd lived and painted, I created drawings that I then scanned and saved into DFX (Drawing Exchange Format) files. The waterjet cut each plywood section directly from these DXF files. Afterwards, I painted and assembled these; each sculpture is four layers deep. |
And if you're in the St. Louis are, I hope you'll join me this Friday, August 15th, at Third Degree Glass Factory for an end-of-summer-carnival-fun Third Friday Open House! From 6pm to 10pm there will be a free photo booth, free ice cream samples, kettle corn, and more! My art show Journeys will be on display in the East Gallery! I've spent the summer painting, varnishing, photographing and framing! And now I'm ready to hang my display! There will be over a dozen never before seen mixed-media map paintings revealed in this show! Exhibition ends September 16, 2014. |
Have a wonderful beginning to your week!
