Essential Risks

“When you’ve found out how to do certain things,
it’s time to stop doing them.
What’s missing is the risk and the risk is essential.”

Ice-climbing Mendenhall Glacier
No, you don’t have to train to go ice-climbing in Alaska – unless you’d like to.
But I thought a memorable image would get the point across: that some risk is essential to new growth…whether it is using a new medium in your drawing, or trying to convey a new idea or concept in your painting, or a new subject matter in your sculpture or – yes – even ice-climbing.  I also believe that all goals require some risk in addition to much discipline.  It doesn’t have to be a huge risk.  I’ve shared some of my other recent risks with you: starting a blog and opening an Etsy shop.

Granted, some risks feel bigger than others.  In the midst of push-ups and pull-ups the entire year before ice-climbing, my sister also successfully convinced me to “Hustle up the Hancock” with her.  If you’re not familiar with the event, participating in the full-stair climb sells out faster than most rock concerts!  Participants actually pay to climb up all 94 flights!  It’s for a great cause.

It helps tremendously to have someone in your corner to cheer you on…be it a new husband at the top the glacier you’re attempting to ice-climb or a sister/best-friend beside you while you ascend 1632 steps together.

What is the next new risk – big or small – you will take?
