DIY Map Art!

I couldn't be more thrilled to have two new stencil designs available at StencilGirl!

Around the World Latitude and Around the World Longitude are a continuation in my stencil series inspired by maps!
Around the World Latitude Stencil
Around the World Latitude (8" round)
Around the World Longitude Stencil
Around the World Longitude (8" round)
Perfect for making monoprints with the 8" round Gelli Arts printing plate, these stencils can also be used in travel journals, paintings, scrapbook layouts, mixed-media art, fiber arts and more!

Today I'm sharing a quick tutorial to create your own map painting using one of these stencils...in 3 simple steps!
DIY Map Art
For this mixed-media painting, I used a 9” x 12” stretched canvas, vintage maps, gel medium and two colors of acrylic paint.

First I chose some vintage maps for their blue and green colors. I tore these into approximately 1” square pieces and adhered these to my stretched canvas with gel medium.

I allowed this to dry overnight. Then the stenciling fun began!
After placing Michelle Ward’s Spheres stencil directly on the canvas, I used an ink sweeper and heavy body turquoise green acrylic and pounced in the design.
DIY Map Art
With a flat paint brush, I painted this same turquoise green in the entire large circle in the lower right-hand corner of the composition.

Once this dried, I placed my Around the World Longitude stencil onto that circle in the corner.
Then I used cobalt teal acrylic and another ink sweeper to stencil again.

This was fun and easy and a great way to try out my new stencil!
Grab your favorite colors and go for it!

Thanks so much for visiting my blog.
And Happy Mapping!

Mary, this is a brilliant idea, using your globe stencil with that circles stencil -- and the results are wonderful! I have one question -- is an Ink Sweeper similar to a wedge-shaped cosmetic sponge? Thanks! Cecilia
