Being a huge fan of Valerie Goodwin’s map quilts, I was super-excited to receive an advanced copy of her new book Art Quilt Maps: Capture a Sense of Place with Fiber Collage – A Visual Guide!
Valerie Goodwin received degrees in architecture from Washington University in St. Louis and Yale and shares how together maps and architecture inspire her work. She explains the tools, supplies and materials needed to create fiber-map quilts – including painting, stamping and stencil supplies – then guides the reader through a series of techniques and exercises for creating maps from both real and imaginary places.
Ms. Goodwin encourages readers to explore creating their own unique map art and describes how traveling and memories are rich resources for map art, too. She shows us how we can be inspired not only by places we’ve traveled to but also by those places we long to visit one day.
In addition, Art Quilt Maps looks at the process of creating fiber-art map from poetry and imagination as well as beginning with a map of an actual location as inspiration. Her haikus included in this book are just lovely. And you’ll have to see her collaged art map of Stonehenge to believe it! It’s exquisite!
Art Quilt Maps will be released September 2013, and is available for preorder on Amazon!
I have read it cover to cover more than once and highly recommend it!
